Dalälven, sea trout on Sweden’s great river

The Dalälven is one of Sweden’s great rivers: it rises in the mountains of Dalarna, land of folk traditions and red wooden horses, and after hundreds of kilometres flows into the Baltic Sea. In its lower reaches it forms rapids and channels that have been fished for centuries.

Between April and May the sea trout run, powerful and unpredictable silver fish. They are fished in wide, fast water with long casts and plenty of patience: every take is an event.

The Älvkarleby area, with its falls and historic hydroelectric plant, combines nature and Swedish industrial history. Days are long, light comes early and lingers into the evening: precious time on the river.

You stay in a riverside lodge or wooden cottages, with simple, good Scandinavian food.

Recommended tackle: double-handed or switch rod, floating and intermediate lines, silver and bright flies in medium sizes, breathable waders and layered clothing.
