The gorges are a columnar basalt canyon carved by an Etna lava flow: you go through in a wetsuit, alternating wading, short swims and a few jumps. Day one is the beginner route and works even for first-timers.

Day two climbs towards Etna’s Silvestri craters, a four-hour walk over the 1892 lava field. Technical gear and guide are included.

What makes this trip special

  • Descent into the basalt canyon
  • Silvestri craters on Etna
  • Dinner in a hut at 1,900 metres
